The science behind muscle memory

Many people who return to exercise after a long break notice something surprising.

The science behind muscle memory

Strength and muscle size seem to come back faster than they did the first time. Someone who stopped training for years may regain their previous fitness in a matter of weeks or months. This common experience has given rise to the idea of “muscle memory”. But do muscles really remember past workouts?

Science suggests that the answer is yes, though not in the way we normally think of memory. Muscles do not remember in the same sense that the brain recalls a past event. Instead, the body undergoes biological changes during training that allow muscles to rebuild more quickly if exercise is resumed later. Researchers have found that these changes occur at several levels, including in muscle cells, the nervous system, and even in gene activity.

What muscle memory means

Muscle memory is a term used to describe the body’s ability to regain muscle strength and size more quickly after a period of inactivity. It refers to the long lasting adaptations that occur during training.

When someone first begins strength training, the body undergoes a learning process. Muscles become stronger and larger because they are repeatedly exposed to resistance. If the person stops exercising for a long period, muscle size and strength may decline. However, when training resumes, the body often rebuilds muscle much faster than it did during the first phase of training.

This accelerated recovery of strength and muscle mass is what people commonly call muscle memory.

Changes in muscle cells

One of the most important discoveries about muscle memory relates to structures within muscle cells known as nuclei.
