Indian Supreme Court grants interim bail to Muslim Professor

The Supreme Court of India on Wednesday granted an interim bail to Ashoka University associate professor Ali Khan Mahmudabad. He was sent to judicial custody on Sunday for his social media posts on Operation Sindoor.

The court, however, refused to stay the two FIRS (First Information Reports) registered against him.

It also barred the Cambridge-educated Mahmudabad from posting anything online regarding the matter.

The top court directed the Haryana Police to form a special investigation team (SIT) of three IPS officers, not belonging to Haryana and including a woman officer, to investigate the terms used in his posts. The police have been directed to form the SIT by Thursday (May 22, 2025). It also asked the police not to entertain fresh FIRs in the matter.

Mahmudabad has been asked to surrender his passport to the Chief Judicial Magistrate, Sonepat, and furnish common bail bonds in both FIRs.

When corruption crosses borders

Not far from the glittering skyline of downtown Toronto, in the leafy suburbs of Mississauga and Markham, stand rows of palatial homes — elegant, glass-fronted, and conspicuously quiet. To a casual visitor, these neighbourhoods look like any other prosperous corner of suburban Canada. But to Bangladeshis, they symbolise something far darker: a destination for the country's looted wealth.
