Diet and hair loss

The Island

Diet plays a powerful part in hair health because hair follicles are among the fastest-growing parts of the body and need a steady supply of building blocks and energy.

When the diet lacks key nutrients, hair growth slows, strands become weak, more hair enters shedding phases, and over time this can lead to noticeable thinning or even hair loss.

Protein is essential for hair because hair shafts are basically made of keratin, a protein. If someone does not eat enough protein, or if protein in the diet is of poor quality, hair follicles may struggle to manufacture keratin and that leads to hair that breaks or falls out more easily. A calorie-deficient diet also indirectly affects hair loss because the body diverts limited energy to vital organs first, leaving hair growth as a non-priority.
