PROPOSAL 'ENABLES CONTINUITY DURING REDEVELOPMENT'

Plans unveiled for temporary market

The proposed site of the temporary market

MULTI-MILLION-POUND regeneration plans for Huddersfield's Open Market have proved controversial, and now, proposals for a temporary market to house traders are awaiting a decision.

Huddersfield Open Market is a Grade II* listed building and was built in 1887, complete with a decorative cast-iron frame, striking glass roof, and historic character. Kirklees Council has secured £16.5m from the government's Levelling Up Fund to give the premises a new lease of life, but its proposals have been met with a great deal of opposition.

Objections have been made on the council’s planning portal and recently, a letter signed by 1,000 people further emphasised the level of concern. Some have voiced concern that the local authority's plans will make the market unfeasible for some traders to use, and others have said that it will be in direct competition with supermarket chains and other businesses due to the increased emphasis on food.
