‘If the price is right, properties around here go in a month’

RETIRED decorator Stuart Elliott has found a little oasis of peace, but it's not always been that way.
Stuart, 77, lived for 10 years in Newsome, Huddersfield, where he found a few too many problems, mostly relating to crime. He’s been in Salendine Nook for the best part of 40 years, and he finds it a tranquil place, despite the proximity of New Hey Road, one of Huddersfield’s busiest routes thanks to its proximity to the M62.
New Hey Road, he says, is busier than ever before, but thankfully he isn’t so close that it affects his life. Stuart says there is “very little trouble” in the area and that suits him. When he lived in Newsome in the 1970s and 1980s, he recalls a spate of “nasty” robberies of shop premises.
He likes “Sally Nook” so much that he’s recommended the area to a young relative because house prices in Huddersfield are cheaper than those in some of the more desirable property hotspots of Leeds and Manchester.
“If the price is right, properties around here go in a month)” says Stuart.
