Christmas fun grows in garden centre

|November 22, 2025
IN a corner of Calderdale, thousands visit from all points on the compass for Christmassy things - and much more.
Gordon Rigg Garden Centre in the village of Walsden, near Todmorden, does way more than it says on the tin because there’s not only a popular tearoom but, across the road, a second cafe, a mill shop and a “mill and motor museum”. The business is currently celebrating its 80th birthday.
It was established in 1945 by Gordon Rigg, a trade unionist and member of the Independent Labour Party.
Gordon died in 2004, leaving behind a family business that now employs over 180 staff at centres in Todmorden and Rochdale, according to the company website.
From modest beginnings growing plants on a smallholding, the business grew and grew. Gardeners from all over the country visit the award-winning garden centre.
