comrades did not come back. He did, though, and the watch came back with him.

He absorbed more poisonous mustard gas than was good for him, but apart from that he came home to Avonmouth physically unscathed. Psychologically, who knows? I never heard him talk about what he had done.

He and my grandmother moved to Paignton and opened a little guest house. I did ask him about the war from time to time, but he would give me a brief answer and then head out to his greenhouse, where his plants were always in need of attention and there was always cricket on the radio.
