'Pride and Joy' celebrates the brilliance of Beryl's art

BERYL Cook: Pride and Joy opened at The Box at the weekend.

This major exhibition features over 80 of the many colourful and distinctive paintings Cook made during her lifetime. It also showcases rarely seen sculptures and textiles plus insights into her personal archive. As well as marking the centenary of her birth, it argues for a reassessment of her work: art doesn’t have to be serious to be taken seriously.

This small but vibrant oil painting is included in the exhibition and is titled ‘Bingo!’ It dates from 1984 and was acquired for The Box’s collection with support from the Arts Council England/V&A Purchase Grant Fund and Art Fund.
