CHRIS ROBINSON RECALLS SOME MAGICAL MOMENTS DOWN THROUGH THE YEARS
-
PLYMOUTH Argyle's eighties story started with them hovering somewhere around the middle of League Division Three, where they had been languishing since they had been relegated in 1977.
After a couple of seasons under Bobby Saxton the club handed the reins to former Scotland international Bobby Moncur who lifted them into the top 10, but still escape from the third tier never really looked on the cards.
Average attendances, which been around 13,000-14,000 when they had enjoyed a couple of seasons in the Second Division in the mid-seventies, had plummeted and had dropped to below 5,000 by 1983. That summer Bobby Moncur had signed Tommy Tynan, destined to became an eighties favourite, scoring 111 league goals and a few more in various cup competitions. He would also win Player of the Year four times during his stint with the Pilgrims.
