Gullfest to soar into Plymouth

PLYMOUTH is once again going to celebrate its great cohabitant - the “majestic” seagull - with a weekend arts festival featuring plenty of poetry, procession and performance.

Gullfest to soar into Plymouth

From Friday, May 30, to Sunday, June 1, Gullfest will soar into Plymouth, bringing seagull-themed painting and sculpture, moving image, music, poetry, workshops and ritual.

This year will feature new and expanded events such as Gull Tarot and Gullaok, or gull karaoke.

Last year’s inaugural event saw about 40 artists and performers take part in events, centred around a gallery in 37 Looe Street.

It attracted global news coverage, being covered by The Herald, The Daily Star, MS World News, and was even a quiz feature on Channel 5.

Gullfest co-organiser Mo Bottomley said: "Whether the svelte lesser black-backed, its larger cousin, the ubiquitous herring gull, the sweet little black-headed gulls, or any of the myriad, sometimes hybrid, species that live alongside us in Plymouth, Gullfest honours them all."

The weekend's festivities open on Friday, May 30, from 6pm at 37 Looe Street, with an evening viewing of artworks in the “gullery’, as well as some readings and a book launch.
