Conservative group leader hails result as 'triumph' for democracy

THE leader of the opposition Tory group at Plymouth City Council said a victory for the 'no' campaign over an elected mayor is a 'triumph'.

Cllr Andy Lugger said: “This is indeed a triumph. The people of Plymouth have spoken, and, it is for conserving the time-served system of governance we have enjoyed for generations.
“Whilst I respect the democratic right to call a referendum in the first place, I regret this referendum has cost local taxpayers dearly. However, it is only a fraction of the cost a directly elected mayor would have cost the city.
