Vim up north: Brits move to Manchester to 'invigorate' music awards

It has been one of the high points of London's music calendar for almost half a century, but now the Brit awards are ditching the capital and moving to Manchester.
The celebration of British music will be held at the Co-op Live arena in 2026 and 2027 - its 50th anniversary - as part of plans to "invigorate" the show, organisers said.
Next year is the first of three years of Sony stewardship for the Brits, responsible for some of the UK's most noteworthy music moments led by northern acts, including Jarvis Cocker mooning at Michael Jackson in 1996, Chumbawamba dumping ice water over the then-deputy prime minister John Prescott in 1998, and Arctic Monkeys frontman Alex Turner's literal mic-drop after his speech trashing the music industry in 2014.
