Britain's trade war dilemma
For Keir Starmer, Donald Trump's escalating trade wars present tough economic and political considerations to weigh up.
The case for retaliationStarmer won plaudits for his handling of Trump in late February after his charm offensive trip to Washington. But since then, the US president's approach has galvanised international opposition - putting Starmer at risk of appearing out of step with his other G7 counterparts.
Politically, it could be popular with a domestic audience for Starmer to retaliate, helping to shift the narrative on from the gloom of the spring statement. Mark Carney has bolstered Canada's ruling Liberal party by taking a tough stance, while Emmanuel Macron has also benefited. Surveys show a majority of western Europeans support retaliatory tariffs, including in the UK.
