More than 30 people killed by earthquake in southern Philippines

More than 30 people have been reported killed after a magnitude-7.8 earthquake shook part of the southern Philippines yesterday, collapsing buildings and triggering tsunami alerts that were later cancelled.
The quake hit early in the morning about 12 miles off the coast of Sarangani province. Tremors were felt strongly across the entire island of Mindanao, where the province is located, and reported more than 260 miles away on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi.
Reports of 32 people killed and 134 injured across the island - mostly from falling debris and landslides - were being verified by the country’s Office of Civil Defense. It told people to avoid entering damaged homes and other infrastructure because of the risk of aftershocks.
Video verified by the Guardian shows the upper floor of a restaurant collapsing and the concrete outer walls of another building giving way in the city of General Santos, near the epicentre of the quake.
