London risks losing its black cabs within 20 years, warns thinktank
The Guardian
|March 20, 2025
Black cabs could disappear from London in 20 years unless action is taken to halt the decline, a thinktank warned yesterday.
The Centre for London suggested a series of urgent measures including giving cabbies bigger loans for new electric taxis and making it easier to pass the "knowledge" test.
The rapid growth of Uber and other private hire firms has helped cause black-cab numbers to fall from 22,810 in 2013-14 to 14,470 in 2023-24.
Just 104 new licences were issued by Transport for London (TfL) last year, compared with 1,010 in 2016.
