EHRC withdraws its advice on response to trans rights ruling

The equalities watchdog has withdrawn controversial interim advice on how institutions should respond to the supreme court ruling on transgender rights, after criticism from rights groups that it could in effect exclude trans people from many public spaces.

The Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) said the advice, published in April, shortly after the court ruled that the legal definition of a woman is solely based on biological sex, had been taken down from its website.

In its place, the EHRC says organisations seeking to understand how to implement the ruling should “take specialist legal advice” until parliament approves the watchdog’s statutory guidance, which was submitted to ministers in September.
