Charity urges Gail's Bakery to drop its plant-based milk surcharge

The animal-rights charity Peta is calling for the Gail's Bakery chain to stop charging extra for plant-based milks.

In a new campaign, the charity claims Gail's "unfairly discriminates" against customers with dairy intolerances and those trying to make more ethical choices.

With at least one in three Britons now drinking plant-based milks, other high-street coffee chains tend to offer soya milk for the same price as cow's milk, though oat, almond and coconut milk often still come at an extra cost.

At Gail's, which is expanding rapidly in Britain, a tea or coffee with soya or oat milk attracts a surcharge ranging from 40p to 60p.
