Biya, 92, declared winner of vote in Cameroon despite rival's claim

Paul Biya, the world’s oldest serving head of state, has been declared the winner of Cameroon’s election, giving him an eighth term that may keep him in office until he is nearly 100.
The constitutional council said Biya had won 53.66% of the vote, while his ally turned challenger, Issa Tchiroma Bakary, got 35.19%.
Biya, 92, took office in 1982 and has held a tight grip on power ever since, doing away with the presidential term limit in 2008 and winning reelection by comfortable margins.
“There was no election, it was rather a masquerade,” Tchiroma said after the results were announced. “We won unequivocally.”
