Analysis: Domestic Issues Take Precedence Over Independence

It was an election fought on the global stage with sporadic commentary from Donald Trump. But in the end, it was domestic issues that drove Greenlanders to the polls to vote overwhelmingly for change.
The US president has made no secret of his desire to gain control of the Arctic island, refusing to rule out economic or military force to do so. During his state of the union address, Trump said that he would acquire Greenland, part of the kingdom of Denmark, "one way or the other." And just a day before the vote, he promised the island's people that the US was ready to "make you rich."
However, Greenland's election was fought and won on domestic issues such as business, fisheries, pensions and healthcare.
