From 10 December, platforms the Australian government has deemed to be included in the social media ban have been ordered to deactivate all accounts for users under 16 and prevent those users from holding an account until after they turn 16.

What is Australia's social media ban for under-16s?

The eSafety commissioner must be satisfied platforms have taken "reasonable steps" to prevent under-16s from holding an account, or they will face fines of up to A$49.5m ($32.7m).

Why is it needed?

Introducing the bill in parliament in November 2024, Australia's thencommunications minister, Michelle Rowland, said social media could be a source of entertainment, education and connection with the world and each other. "But for too many young Australians, social media can be harmful," she said. "Almost twothirds of 14- to 17-year-old Australians have viewed extremely harmful content online, including drug abuse, suicide or self-harm, as well as violent material." Rowland detailed Australian eSafety commission research saying parents found online safety to be one of their biggest challenges.
