'Transforming schools involves tackling the poor behaviour'

A TEESSIDE school was handing out suspensions at a higher rate than any other in England, new government figures reveal.

Outwood Academy Normanby handed out a total of 2,666 suspensions in the 2023/24 academic year, according to the latest figures available from the Department for Education. That works out as 14 a day, based on a standard 190-day school year.

That's the fifth highest number of any other state-funded secondary school in England. But Outwood Grange Academies Trust has said in the most recent school year suspensions have dropped by 62% while there's been a 64% reduction in exclusions.

Relative to pupil headcount, Outwood Academy Normanby had the highest rate in the country. Its suspensions worked out at the equivalent of 348 for every 100 pupils.
