A THUG who was waiting for his bus home carried out an horrific attack on another man.

- BY ESTHER HALLIGAN esther.halligan@reachplc.com @TeessideLive

Ronan Johnson heard his victim arguing with someone on his phone, as they both waited at a bus stop near West Terrace in Redcar, on the evening of August 23, 2023.

There was a group of children waiting nearby and Teesside Crown Court has heard that Johnson told the man “not to shout near children”.

Johnson then chased his victim, who ran down an alleyway.

The 26-year-old continued looking for him, just after 8.30pm, and when he chased the man again, the victim fell over.

The man later told police that the last thing he remembers was, “Johnson hitting me in the face with a clenched fist and trying to take my phone”.

Rachel Butt, prosecuting, told the court that a shocked member of the public then saw Johnson “stamp on his victim's head four times”.

The victim lost consciousness.

“She tried to intervene,’ Ms Butt said, “another member of the public helped but he was punched by the defendant.

“Another person was so concerned they got out of their car and ran after Johnson - who ran away”
