Sue is crossing over to retirement

The Gazette

NOT even breaking her arm after being clipped by a car persuaded lollipop lady Sue Latheron to hang up her stick.

- By DAVE ROBSON

Sue was involved in an incident three years ago that saw her struck by a passing car as she patrolled the crossing near St Gabriel's School on Normanby Road.

Thankfully after recuperating, she returned to a career which, by the time she ends her final shift on Friday this week, will have spanned 38 years.

And Sue, who was born in Park End and grew up in Ormesby, says helping thousands of children safely across Teesside roads has been a joy.

Sue married husband Brian in 1976 but he died 20 years ago, aged 49, after being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis when aged 34.

Daughter Rebecca also died, aged 21, after a huge asthma attack, while Sue has one son, Anthony, and a grandson Jake, 12.
