Plans registered for new Lidl store

A HOUSEHOLD supermarket name has seen its plans for a new store registered by Middlesbrough Council.

- By DANIEL HODGSON

Lidl is seeking to open a supermarket on the site of the former Northern School of Art in Linthorpe.

The lodging of plans comes within a month of the company formally seeking permission to build a store further south in the town, in Marton. As was previously proposed, the Linthorpe store would be located on the corner of Green Lane and Roman Road.

Past plans for this site were rejected by councillors in late 2023 and the resulting appeal was dismissed by the Planning Inspectorate in autumn 2024.

Lidl said it remains committed to bringing a much-needed food store to the area and has revealed its updated plans following consultation. The discounter has redesigned its proposal, which would see a smaller store than previously put forward. The plans were registered by the council on September 9, 2025.
