Shredded plastic bottles used for city road repair

True to his reputation as an environmentalist and green innovator, Cebu City Mayor Nestor Archival has begun turning plastic waste into road-building material by integrating shredded polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles into its asphalt mix, using plastic waste collected during a basketball event at the Cebu City Sports Institute (CCSI).

Archival said the initiative comes amid limited asphalt supply and growing calls for sustainable infrastructure.

“Apas is one of the areas with the worst road conditions. Our asphalt is limited, so we’re using what we have. We shredded the PET bottles this morning, brought them to the batching plant, and mixed them with aggregates and base materials. That’s what we used for the asphalt in Apas,” Archival said.
