Coach Tom Thibodeau has been in the NBA since 1989 as part of the Minnesota coaching staff headed by Bill Musselman.
The 67-year old Thibs graduated to head coaching position for the past 15 years calling the shots for Chicago, Minnesota and New York.
In his five seasons with the Knicks, he took them to the postseason four times, highlighted with this year’s Eastern Conference Finals, NYK’s first since 2000. Yet, Knicks owner James Dolan was not impressed that he gave Coach Thibs the pink slip on June 3.
Presently, NYK is the only headless team in the NBA and management had tried to lure four currently employed head coaches (unsuccessfully) — Jason Kidd (DAL), Ime Udoka (HOU), Billy Donovan (CHI) and Chris Finch (MIN). The Knicks were not given permission by these teams to interview their respective coaches.
