Conventional power plants remain vital amid RE push

Conventional power plants will remain central to stabilizing the Philippine grid as the country ramps up renewable energy, according to a senior executive at Aboitiz Power Corp.

Speaking at the American Chamber of Commerce's 8th Annual Energy Forum, Rolando "Don" Paulino, chief engineering and projects officer at AboitizPower's Transition Business Group, said coal and other conventional facilities provide the reliability needed to balance the intermittency of wind and solar.
“Conventional power provides the stability, flexibility, and reliability that will allow emerging technologies and cleaner sources to scale,” Paulino said.
“Without it, the transition risks being unbalanced and unable to meet the country’s growing demand,” he added.
