Cebu defers P20-per-kilo rice sale pending Comelec opinion

Cebu Governor Gwendolyn Garcia says the sale of P20-per-kilo rice in the province will be deferred for the meantime until they receive a definitive opinion from the Commission on Elections (Comelec).

The program, which had its official rollout on May 1 in Cebu, was supposed to be implemented under the Capitol's Sugbo Mercadong Barato (SMB).
The initiative is aligned with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.'s 2022 campaign promise to lower the price of rice to P20 per kilo.
Comelec earlier reminded government agencies that the distribution of any form of financial aid or “ayuda”—even those previously granted exemptions—is not allowed until after the May 12 polls.
Garcia earlier said the SMB is exempted from the Comelec's election ban. However, she emphasized yesterday that they will not take the risk.
