Cebu City chosen as among top 3 cities for sustainable urbanization strategy

|July 17, 2025
Cebu City is one of the three Philippine cities chosen for phase II of the ASEAN Sustainable Urbanization Strategy (ASUS), a visionary initiative backed by the Australian Government to nurture smarter, greener, and more resilient cities across Southeast Asia.
-
In a coordination meeting, key city officials and ASEAN urban development experts outlined Cebu's transformative roadmap.
In attendance during the meeting were City Planning and Development Office (CPDO) Head Anne Cuizon, Cebu City Transportation Office assistant head, Atty. Kent Jungoy, United Nations (UN) urban specialist Sovan Sieng, and Mayor Nestor Archival, who reaffirmed the City’s commitment to data-driven solutions and inclusive mobility.
The Freeman learned from Jongoy that Archival is looking at not only upgrading, but also integrating public, private, and active transport modes into a single, smart system.
This integrated mobility strategy will build upon the City's existing Eagle's Eye Command Center, a platform equipped with CCTV monitoring and AI-powered traffic lights, soon to be expanded with enhanced capabilities for flood control and public safety.
At the heart of Cebu’s participation lies the development of a City technical proposal—a blueprint that captures its current assets and ambitious goals.
It will connect the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system, intelligent traffic networks, and urban safety infrastructure into a cohesive framework aimed at sustainable growth and regional resilience.
Jongoy highlighted ASEAN’s critical role in amplifying Cebu’s efforts.
