Election Commission's Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, which has led to the deletion of nearly six crore voters and sparked a bitter confrontation with the Opposition, has completed one year, with the exercise now underway in 19 states and UTs.

The pilot SIR was launched in Bihar on June 24 last year ahead of Assembly polls. The revision pruned the state's electoral roll by nearly 65 lakh names, prompting allegations from opposition parties and activists that it was being used to disenfranchise voters lacking documentary proof. In March, however, the Supreme Court unanimously upheld the constitutional validity of EC's decision to conduct SIR.
