Women right group petitions against Vedan song in syllabus

A women’s rights group has petitioned Kerala Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar, who serves as Chancellor of the state universities, to intervene in the incorporation of rapper Vedan’s work into university curricula, citing serious ethical concerns amid ongoing legal proceedings.

The Council for Women’s Rights and Safety, in its communication, argues that mandating studies of Vedan’s song “Bhumi Njan Vazhunna Idam’” within the Malayalam literature course at the University of Calicut and the University of Kerala may create a hostile environment for women students, especially as Vedan faces a rape charge. The group emphasised that the petition does not dispute the literary value of the song but raises questions about the timing and institutional responsibility under the principle of gender justice.
