What is the scenario in water infrastructure in urban and rural regions?

India’s water infrastructure presents contrasting scenarios across rural and urban regions though government schemes which are steadily bridging the gap. In rural India, JJM has made significant progress, 81% of rural households had access to functional tap water connections a sharp rise from less than 20% in 2019.

District level progress is equally encouraging; Mysuru, for instance, reported 84% coverage under JJM earlier this year. Nationally the SDG 2025 Report confirmed that access to improved drinking water sources in rural areas had reached an impressive 99.6%.

Urban India tells a different story, here the focus is on addressing legacy issues such as aging pipelines, high non-revenue water and underdeveloped sewage treatment.

Under AMRUT 2.0 urban tap water coverage has risen to about 70% and sewerage coverage to 62% as of late 2024. Large scale projects are underway, Nashik’s 7300 crore AMRUT-backed upgrade is strengthening water distribution networks, while states like Madhya Pradesh are embedding digital tools such as SCADA and GIS for smarter water management. Notably, in Q4 FY2024-25 alone, nearly 890 sewerage projects were grounded nationwide, adding 4,447 MLD of treatment capacity with 1437 MLD earmarked for reuse.
