Control of the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation by the Bharatiya Janata Party has reopened a politically charged debate over the deployment of electric buses procured for city services, with the new administration asserting that vehicles funded for urban transport must not be operated beyond municipal boundaries.

The BJP-led council has conveyed to officials that electric buses acquired under the civic body’s transport initiatives were intended strictly for city routes and feeder services, and that running them on longer intercity or suburban stretches dilutes both the purpose of the project and the benefits promised to residents.
