The Kerala High Court has declared that temple priest positions cannot be confined to particular castes or family lineages, stating such restrictions do not qualify as essential religious practices under the Constitution.
A division bench of Justices Raja Vijayaraghavan V and K V Jayakumar delivered the verdict on 22 October, dismissing a writ petition filed by the Akhila Kerala Thanthri Samajam, a society representing around 300 traditionalThanthri families.
