Toll waiver at Chennai Airport for vulnerable passengers
The Free Press Journal - Bhopal
|November 22, 2025
Chennai airport authorities have introduced a scheme allowing taxis and private vehicles that drop off or pick up senior citizens, individuals with disabilities, pregnant women, and mothers with infants to use the terminal area without toll charges for up to 15 minutes.
Drivers must collect a special pass and a QR-coded entry slip at the entrance, surrender it when exiting, and thereby avoid toll payments during that time-span.
The policy shift follows mounting complaints on social media and repeated disagreements at toll booths, where vehicles spending more than ten minutes inside the airport premises were fined—even when dealing with mobility-impaired passengers or large amounts of luggage.
Private cars had faced an %85 charge after ten minutes, while taxis paid 245 for initial entry and faced additional charges beyond ten minutes.
At the airport, drivers often refused to pick up passengers with reduced mobility, citing fear of penalties.
