There are 57 satellites in the orbit and the number is going to triple in three years said the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) Chairman, V Narayanan here on Tuesday while delivering the keynote address at the 68th Annual Day celebrations of Indian Railways Institute of Signal Engineering and Telecommunications (IRISET).

Spelling out the strides that ISRO has taken he said, "If I summarise the Indian space programme, which started with the cycle era, by 2040, we will be on par with any other space bearing nation, in terms of launches, satellites, communication, application or capabilities.”

Narayanan said the PM has announced space sector reforms and that five launch vehicles have been handed over to private industrial consortiums. "The first rocket is coming, we are going to launch it," he said.
