Vaccinations during pregnancy: What's safe and necessary for maternal health

Among the vaccines considered both safe and essential during pregnancy, two are strongly recommended: the influenza (flu) vaccine and the Tdap vaccine (tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis).

Vaccinations during pregnancy are most important as it protects both the mother and the to-be born child from serious infectious diseases. During pregnancy, a woman's immune system undergoes natural changes, making her more susceptible to infections that could lead to severe complications for herself and her baby. Immunizations not only help prevent these illnesses but also pass on protective antibodies to the baby, offering crucial protection during the first few months of life when the infant is most vulnerable and too young to receive certain vaccines.
