'Turn the volume up': Mamdani fires first shot in showdown with Trump

Amid echoes of Nehru’s “tryst with destiny” and the thumping beats of Dhoom Machale, 34-year-old Zohran Mamdani took the stage in Brooklyn to declare a new dawn for New York — and a challenge to Washington: “Donald Trump, since I know you're watching, I have four words for you — turn the volume up.”

The Democratic socialist from Queens, born in Uganda to filmmaker Mira Nair and academic Mahmood Mamdani, has become New York City’s first Muslim, first South Asian immigrant, and youngest mayor in over a century. His victory speech set the tone for what could become a defining political showdown with President Trump.

Defeating former Governor Andrew Cuomo’s independent bid and Republican Curtis Sliwa, Mamdani secured 50.6% of the vote — over one million ballots, the highest for any New York mayoral candidate in three decades, The Hill reported.
