Following the imposition of a significant wave of punitive tariffs on India and other nations in the Global South, US President Donald Trump has announced a staggering increase in the H1B visa fee, amounting to USD 100,000 (equivalent to INR 88 lakh). This decision would cause extensive damage not only to the foreign nationals working in the US, including those from India, China, Canada, and Brazil, but would also be adversely affecting the ease of doing business for companies in the US that previously relied on these foreign workers for their essential skills and efficiency. As if this were not sufficient, Trump further fuelled controversy by delivering an unconvinced speech at the UN General Assembly this week, where he claimed credit for ending seven wars. The global community is left questioning, which seven wars? Additionally, Trump has issued threats to Türkiye regarding its oil and gas purchases from Russia and has urged NATO to commence military actions against Russia. His actions in West Asia have already led to a loss of trust from Gulf countries, with Saudi Arabia entering into a historic defence agreement with Pakistan. Also, he has imposed tariffs on pharmaceutical products, which will significantly affect the prices of essential medicines and equipment in the US market. The significant question remains: why is Trump undermining his nation's reputation and relationships with the nations like India? This week, Trump also made shock waves in the technology sector by announcing a substantial increase in H-1B visa fees, elevating the cost to USD 100,000, which is nearly 50 times higher than the previous fee.
