SARDAR PATEL'S DEATH ANNIVERSARY AND THE ADMINISTRATIVE IDEA OF 'UNITY' IN A FEDERAL DEMOCRACY

The austere lawyer from Gujarat, who became the “Iron Man of India,” died on 15 December 1950 in Bombay after suffering a massive heart attack. News of his death plunged the young Republic into mourning; Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru eulogised him in Parliament as the “builder and consolidator of the new India”. Patel's legacy as India's first Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister lay not merely in military victory or popular slogans but in the institutions he helped to create and the hard administrative decisions that held a fragile Union together. His vision of unity was practical and procedural, not rhetorical. This report narrates Patel's life chronologically, examines his institution-building work and explores how the idea of unity has evolved in India's federal democracy—from the integration of princely states and the reorganisation of provinces along linguistic lines to the era of coalition politics and the contemporary debates about cooperative federalism and fiscal autonomy.

FROM BARDOLI SATYAGRAHA TO THE DEPUTY PRIME MINISTERSHIP

Vallabhbhai Jhaverbhai Patel was born in Nadiad, Gujarat on 31 October 1875. He trained as a lawyer in London and practised law before joining the nationalist movement. His organisational abilities emerged during the Kheda satyagraha (1918) and the Bardoli satyagraha to the Deputy Prime Ministership.
