This week, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi concluded a tour of three nations: Jordan, Ethiopia, and Oman, which took place from 15-18 December 2025. The purpose of this visit was to enhance India's relationships with its partners in West Asia and Africa, and it represented important diplomatic achievements with each of the countries involved.
The trip proved to be productive in advancing both bilateral relations and fostering Global South cooperation.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi's trip to Jordan has yielded meaningful results in the political, economic, and cultural spheres. The experts have characterized the visit as noteworthy, as it aligns with the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two nations and represents the first comprehensive bilateral visit by an Indian prime minister to Jordan in 37 years.
A significant result of the visit was the establishment of a twinning agreement between Petra (Jordan) and Ellora (India) aimed at enhancing tourism and fostering cultural collaboration. Additionally, a letter of intent was also signed regarding digital transactions, which encompasses the utilization of RuPay cards. Discussions also included civil nuclear energy as a viable clean energy alternative. Also, regional developments, particularly the circumstances in Gaza, were also a topic of discussion.
India and Jordan maintain a warm, enduring, and multifaceted relationship that has developed into a robust strategic partnership. Established in 1950, this relationship is marked by high-level political exchanges, strong trade and investment collaboration, and an increasing partnership in defence, technology, energy, education, and culture. Both countries share similar views on regional and global matters and work together in multilateral platforms such as the UN.
