One nation, many celebrations: India's festival travel unity
The Daily Guardian
|October 14, 2025
India, often referred to as the land of festivals, offers a unique cultural mosaic where people from different regions, religions, and linguistic backgrounds come together in celebration.
While each region of India has its own customs, food, music, and festivals, what binds the nation together is the spirit of celebration and shared joy. Traveling during festival seasons across the country not only allows people to witness the diversity of India but also helps reinforce the deep-rooted sense of unity that exists within this diversity.
THE SPIRIT OF SHARED CELEBRATION
Festivals in India are more than just religious or cultural observances; they are social occasions that transcend barriers of caste, creed, and language. Whether it is Diwali in North India, Durga Puja in Bengal, Pongal in Tamil Nadu, or Eid across the nation, these festivals are celebrated with communal harmony and warmth.
People traveling during festivals often find themselves welcomed into homes, invited to meals, or included in local customs. This hospitable nature and openness foster a sense of belonging, even among strangers. For instance, a Sikh family visiting Kerala during Onam may be invited to participate in the Onam Sadhya (traditional feast), while a Tamilian traveling to Kolkata during Durga Puja can be found offering anjali (prayers) alongside Bengali devotees. Such shared experiences help break cultural barriers and reinforce the message that despite our varied identities, we are all part of one greater whole — India.
RAJASTHAN: A FESTIVAL DESTINATION THAT UNITES CULTURES
Rajasthan, known for its royal heritage and vibrant traditions, stands as a shining example of how festivals can unite people from across the country. Traveling to Rajasthan during festivals like Diwali, Gangaur, Teej, Desert Festival, or Mewar Festival offers a glimpse into a culture that proudly welcomes all with open arms.
