LAWRENCE BISHNOI: THE RISE OF HIS GANG AND ITS TRANSNATIONAL REACH

Indian police link Bishnoi's gang to Baba Siddique's (centre) killing; Salman Khan (left) has also been threatened.

The Lawrence Bishnoi gang is a major transnational criminal organization led by its founder from an Indian jail. Using smuggled phones and encrypted apps, Bishnoi commands a network of over 700 shooters in India and abroad.

The gang's primary activities include extortion targeting celebrities (like Salman Khan) and wealthy individuals, as well as drug and arms trafficking. They are locked in a fierce, bloody rivalry with the Davinder Bambiha gang. This conflict motivated the 2022 murder of Punjabi singer Sidhu Moose Wala.

Due to its involvement in organized crime and accusations of targeting diaspora members in North America, the gang has been designated a terrorist entity by Canada, highlighting its shift from a local racket to an international threat.

The transformation of an Indian organized crime syndicate into an internationally recognized terrorist entity was formally completed in September 2025, when Canada listed Lawrence Bishnoi's gang as a "terrorist" organisation under the Criminal Code. Public Safety Minister Gary Anandasangaree announced the designation, stating the gang had deliberately "instilled fear within Indian diaspora communities" across the country.

This action immediately grants Canadian law enforcement powerful tools: the ability to freeze assets, seize property and funds, and prosecute members under severe anti-terrorism laws, thereby strengthening efforts to disrupt recruitment, financing, and international travel linked to the gang's operations.
