Kuldhara: The abandoned village of Jaisalmer that whispers legends

The fascinating village of Kuldhara lies just 18 km from the historic city of Jaisalmer. Once a prosperous settlement, today it stands abandoned — a ghost village frozen in time. With crumbling sandstone structures, haunting silence, and tales of a mysterious mass exodus, Kuldhara is one of India's most intriguing travel destinations. For history lovers, paranormal seekers, and offbeat explorers, Kuldhara offers a unique blend of legend, mystery, and stark desert beauty.

THE STORY BEHIND THE ABANDONMENT Kuldhara was established in the 13th century by the Paliwal Brahmins, a community known for their intellect, agricultural skills, and trading acumen. At its peak, the village was home to over 1,500 people and was one of the 84 villages that prospered under the Paliwals in the region. However, by the early 19th century, the entire population of Kuldhara vanished overnight — and no one knows exactly why. Local folklore attributes the exodus to the tyranny of Salim Singh, the then Diwan of Jaisalmer. According to legend, the Diwan fell in love with a beautiful girl from Kuldhara and threatened to take her by force. To protect her honor and dignity, the entire community chose to abandon their homes and disappeared — possibly overnight. Before leaving, they are said to have cursed the land, ensuring no one could ever settle there again.

To this day, Kuldhara remains uninhabited, and despite multiple attempts, no one has successfully made it their home.
