Green vs greed: Student-led protests halt tree cutting near Hyderabad University campus
The Daily Guardian
|July 18, 2025
Humans witnessed the hottest summer on Earth in 2024, as confirmed by the World Meteorological Organization and NASA.
According to a report from NASA, the summer of 2024 was globally 1.25 degrees Celsius warmer than the average summer between 1951 and 1980.
On one hand, there is widespread concern about global warming, which calls for sustainable practices to protect our environment, especially planting more trees and reducing pollution.
On the other hand, the Telangana government decided to cut down trees across 400 acres in Kancha Gachibowli for development projects.
This gap between what the world is worried about and what's actually happening on the ground didn't go unnoticed, news of the student-led protest in Kancha Gachibowli caught the public eye across the country, sparking conversations about what progress really means and how we treat the nature around us.
Kancha Gachibowli is an ecologically rich area, home to over 455 species of flora and fauna.
The government's decision to cut down trees and clear the forest starkly reveals the extent of our commitment to environmental sustainability, or the lack thereof, and highlights the boundless nature of human greed.
