To make it, heat two cups of milk in a saucepan until it is hot but not boiling. In a separate bowl, whisk together four egg yolks, half a cup of sugar, and a tablespoon of cornstarch until smooth. Slowly pour the hot milk into the egg mixture while whisking continuously to temper the eggs. Return the mixture to the saucepan and cook over low heat, stirring constantly until it thickens.
