China's shift in economic strategy: Reducing reliance on the United States
The Daily Guardian
|March 29, 2025
In recent years, China has made a concerted effort to adjust its economic strategies in response to rising tensions with the United States.
The ongoing trade war, characterized by mounting tariffs and protectionist policies, has prompted China to seek alternatives for growth and strengthen its relationships with countries in the Global South.
This shift is not just about diversifying trade relationships but also about ensuring that the country's long-term growth is less vulnerable to the whims of an increasingly unpredictable U.S. government. At the Boao Forum for Asia, a key event held in Hainan province, Chinese Vice-Premier Ding Xuexiang outlined China's plans to stabilize its economy and pivot towards fostering stronger ties with nations in Asia, Africa, and Latin America.
CHINA'S DIPLOMATIC PIVOT China has long recognized itself as part of the Global South, identifying with the economic challenges faced by many low- and middle-income nations. Despite being the world's second-largest economy, China's leadership has made it clear that it wants to deepen its partnerships with countries in this group.
This was the key theme at the Boao Forum for Asia, where discussions centered on boosting China's role in Asia and strengthening relations with countries in the Global South. The event showcased China's commitment to supporting these countries, especially as the U.S. has increasingly focused on protectionist policies that affect global trade.
The lineup of speakers at the forum was a clear reflection of this diplomatic pivot. Leaders from countries such as Laos, Russia, Kazakhstan, and Iran were present, further cementing China's strategy to strengthen ties with nations that are often left out of the U.S.-dominated global economic system. With many countries in the Global South facing common developmental challenges, China's outreach represents an opportunity to build more equitable and mutually beneficial trade relationships.
