BREATHWORK VS MEDITATION: WHICH ONE REDUCES STRESS FASTER?
The Daily Guardian
|November 21, 2025
In a world where stress has become an everyday companion, people are increasingly turning to simple, accessible practices that promise calm and clarity. Among these, breathworkandmeditationare two of the most popular methods for reducing stress. Both have roots in ancient traditions, both are scientifically validated, and both can be practiced anywhere. But the big question remains:which one works faster when you need immediate relief?
Breathing technique Breathwork vs Meditation Meditation
WHAT IS BREATHWORK?
Breathwork refers to conscious, controlled patterns of breathing designed to influence the body’s physiological state. Techniques likebox breathing, diaphragmatic breathing, alternate nostril breathing (anulom vilom), and the 4-7-8 methoddirectly engage the autonomic nervous system.
When you take slow, deep breaths, you stimulate the vagus nerve, which lowers heart rate, reduces cortisol (the stress hormone), and activates the relaxation response. This effect is almost instantaneous, which is why breathwork is widely used in therapy, sports, and even the military for rapid stress control.
WHAT IS MEDITATION?
Meditation is a mental practice that trains attention and awareness. The most common forms include mindfulness meditation, focused attention meditation, mantra-based meditation, andbody-scan meditation.
