The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has unveiled its first list of 88 candidates for the forthcoming Assam Assembly elections, signalling a carefully crafted strategy that combines organisational continuity with the inclusion of new faces, including several prominent leaders who have recently defected from the Congress.

BJP announces Assam candidates, includes high-profile Congress switchovers

One of the most striking aspects of the list is the accommodation of former Congress leaders who joined the BJP in the run-up to the elections. Notably, senior leader and former MP Pradyut Bordoloi has been nominated from the Dispur constituency. In a similar move, Bhupen Bora has been fielded from Bihpuria, replacing incumbent MLA Amiya Kumar Bhuyan. Bora switched allegiance to the BJP in February, aligning himself with Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
