393 Anganwadi workers face action over illegal abortions in Haryana

In a sweeping crackdown to curb illegal abortions and arrest the declining sex ratio, the Haryana government has issued show-cause notices to 393 Anganwadi workers appointed as 'Sahelis' in areas flagged for suspected sex-selective terminations of pregnancies.

The action follows concerns that these grassroots workers failed to monitor and counsel pregnant women—particularly those with existing daughters—thus enabling illegal abortions.
The decision was taken after a weekly review meeting of the State Task Force chaired by Additional Chief Secretary (Health) Sudhir Rajpal on June 17. The task force, constituted under the directives of Health Minister Aarti Singh Rao, reviewed sex determination and abortion-related violations across districts, focusing especially on Mewat, Gurugram, Palwal, and Faridabad—where enforcement drives have intensified in recent months.
